  2. There are some great tips on here. I just moved and have to use a storage unit for a few months. I didn't rust proof my metal items though. I hope I don't have any problems. http://www.stickitstorage.com.au/sizes.asp

  3. Something that I've seen also help is to use pallets to put your stuff on. One time it rained and the storage unit had a leak that covered most the floors. Lucky for us, we had pallets that kept all my books dry. I do that for everything now, you never know when something might go wrong.

  4. I'm going to be downsizing in a few months. I need a good place to keep the stuff I don't have room for anymore. I'll definitely need to consider finding a self storage unit. These tips will definitely make the storage process easier. Unfortunately I'm not very organized...I tend to cram storage into closets and slam the door before it can tumble out. I'll be sure to follow these tips if I can find a good self storage unit! Thanks so much for the tips! http://www.millstreamselfstorage.com/

  5. Creating a small map of where things are stored as you fill up a self-storage unit is another great idea. Tape it to the wall before you close and lock the unit. When you come back in a few months, you can still locate individual items because of the map, even when they are underneath stacks of boxes. santamonicaministorage.com

  6. I really like your tip to put frequently used items in the front of the storage unit. My brother recently is living with his in-laws while building a house and had to put all his belongings in a storage unit. They have had their things in storage for a lot longer than they originally planned. I think they wish they would have put some of their more used items in a more convenient location. http://www.spacebank.net/self-storage-pasadena.htm

  7. Spraying metal items with rust protector is something I have never thought of before! My parents have kept some of their possessions in a storage unit for as long as I can remember. A few weeks ago when we were going through their unit, I was amazed by how many of their metal objects had accumulated rust! I'd imagine that spraying them with some kind of product would have helped to preserve them better! http://www.montgomeryvillextraspacestorage.com/Storage-Units-Montgomeryville-PA.html

  10. I am moving to the city and I have a lot of stuff. All of my friends have told me that it is a good idea because moving from a home to a city apartment is a lot smaller. I didn't know that there were such technical ways to pack your stuff. Thanks for the tips. http://www.countryhillsstorage.com/new_page_5.htm

  11. My wife keeps getting more and more Christmas decorations every year. I don't know why her friends keep making that stuff and giving it to us. Our attic is full of all these things that we can only put up for thirty days. A storage unit would help me get my attic back. http://www.penrithlockupstorage.com.au/contact

  12. Getting the most out of your self storage while maintaining the ability to get to certain things is hard. Being slow and very deliberate during packing is a great idea. Make sure you know what box has what.

  13. I like the tip, leave small walkways. That way you can get to everything that is in your self storage. It seems like you would have more access to your storage unit that way. http://www.storagestation.ca

  15. I think it's good to know what storage units are for, because a lot of times people could just organize there house and they wouldn't even need a storage unit. Sometimes it can't be helped though, and so it's good that there are pretty cheap storage unit options for those in need. http://www.arthursselfstorage.com

  16. What a neat infographic. It has seemed like a putting a puzzle together in consideration of my storage needs. No one wants to have their items broken while in storage. I'll have to print your infographic off and save it for later times when I need a storage unit.

  17. Something that has really helped me out with my storage habits is to create a map. That way I know where I would have to go to find something. Also putting my boxes on pallets has been a lifesaver. One time there was a leak in the roof and flooded the floor completely, but since we had pallets up it wasn't a problem for us at all.

  18. We have been talking about getting a storage unit now that we are about to move into a new place. We will have to remember to treat our metal things with rust protector. Keeping this clean and organized will make it a lot easier to find things again when it's time. http://budgetstorageandremovals.com.au/

  19. I liked your tip about laying down plastic sheeting before moving boxes into the storage unit. I've also heard of using pallets to make sure your boxes and other things are up off the floor, just in case there's flooding or something else. I also like the idea of having a walkway so you can easily reach things in the back of the unit. It's really easy to just stack things back to front, but if you need something in the back, it'll be hard to get to! http://www.magnumselfstorage.com/rates.html

  20. I think you're right: getting your mattresses wrapped is a great idea. It may seem like overkill, but it can save you a lot of money. Doing simple things like that can keep you from needing to repurchase and replace in the long run. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. http://www.fortknoxstorageaz.com

  21. I would not have thought to leave walkways through the stored items, but that is a great idea. Without a walkway, you may have to essentially unpack everything if you have to get to something in the unit. To make a walkway and organize things correctly may take a little extra planning and effort initially, but I imagine it would pay off in the future.

  24. Wow, this is smart! I hadn't ever thought about using a garbage can for shovels and the like. I also definitely need to try that photograph trick. I hate opening an old box of photos to find they've all curled up. http://www.montgomeryvillextraspacestorage.com/Storage-Units-Montgomeryville-PA.html

  25. These "how to" info-graphics are some of the best helps out there these days. I am a visual learner, so actually see how to store stuff in my storage unit is a truly helpful idea. In a lot of ways how to use a storage unit is almost a metaphor for how to assemble a puzzle. For example, it is a great idea to wrap your mattresses for storing.

  29. You made a great point about leaving enough space between the boxes that I have in storage. It seems like that would be a good way to allow myself to maneuver between boxes so that I can get the things that I need. You made an interesting point about how doing that can also be a good way to allow air to circulate in my unit to prevent my things from collecting moisture and mildew. I haven't thought of it that way before, so I'm glad that you brought it up so that mold an mildew growth won't be an issue in my unit. Thanks for the tips!

  32. This is some really great advice for anyone looking to invest in a self storage unit. Maximizing space is one of the easiest ways to get the most out of self storage, so things like this are always helpful. I really liked your point about disassembling furniture if you can; I have a desk I was going to store in one piece before I remembered it can be taken apart into three to free up a lot of space. 34. The tip about putting photographs between two pieces of cardboard is very clever. Being in a storage unit for long time, papers, especially photos, would tend to bend. Putting them in protective cases that not only keep them flat but sealed could help keep your photographs fresh while in storage.
